Exploring & Escapades

bits & pieces of my travels

The Gulf

For Labor Day weekend, we drove down to the Gulf Coast – specifically, the Florida / Alabama line, which is about four and a half hours from where we are in Columbus, Mississippi. I had never been to the Gulf Coast before, and I had been deeply missing the ocean, so it was a highly welcomed escape.

The Gulf is very different than the beaches I’m used to at home. It felt much less developed. No candy stores and arcades or other attractions – the kind that pop up in the most touristy destinations. Instead, the focus was on the beach and the water. Simply being alive and enjoying it.

Dixie Fish Company

I had to fly out of Birmingham, Alabama this weekend, which is about two and a half hours away from Columbus, so we decided to make a day of it and stop for lunch nearby. A friend recommended Dixie Fish Co, and I still can’t stop thinking about it. In Boston and Miami, it’s easy to take good food for granted; in The South, it’s much harder to come by anything that isn’t a giant chain. So Dixie Fish was extra special. The food, the decor, the vibe, the open air; I can’t say enough good things. I only wish it were closer.

Alabama Back Roads

Driving from New Orleans, we lost track of time and drove straight through to Alabama. And that’s how we found ourselves driving down the back roads of Alabama, listening to the Country Countdown, on a Sunday morning.

Birmingham, ALJust one day in a totally different world. Spontaneous change of plans, a hotel & a train in between places.
